Onycholysis, or lifting of the nail from its bed, can follow chemicals, medications, or point to thyroid issues. It usually begins at the free edge and progresses inward, creating a white or opaque zone as air slips beneath. Psoriasis, fungus, trauma, and certain antibiotics like tetracyclines also contribute. Excess manicures and prolonged water exposure worsen separation. Management targets the cause: keep the area dry, avoid further irritation, trim carefully, and allow regrowth. When systemic disease is involved, treating that condition prevents recurrence.
