Dark streaks can follow injury that bleeds under the plate. Without trauma history, urgent medical review is wise because a line may signal skin cancer. Called melanonychia, a single new band is most concerning. Some lines relate to drugs, pregnancy, or normal variation, yet any widening, darkening, or changing streak should be checked to rule out subungual melanoma. Early assessment is critical.
