Country Coke futilely spent tonnes of money on celebrity spokespeople for New Coke, but it turned out that Pepsi's, which targeted what the rival company called the “Pepsi generation,” was the reason for Coke's declining market share. In retrospect, Coke would have been better off using the funds for a competing advertising campaign to offset Pepsi's astute marketing. The southern states of the United States were a major factor in New Coke's failure. Since the original Coca-Cola recipe was developed in Atlanta, southern consumers were particularly accustomed to the flavour of the beverage by the time New Coke was introduced. Southerners were incensed at Coca-Cola's capitulation and even started special interest organisations to restore the original Coke when the company attempted to sweeten and alter its recipe to resemble Pepsi.
